A protocol is a standard that governs network communications by providing a set of rules for its operation. (a similar example of this is a simple phone call when the caller hears the word "hello" the talking can start, an engaged tone means no talking and an answering machine means again no talking. This is a very simple example of a protocol.)
There are four main Protocol Suites:
- TCP/IP (Developed by the US government and is free to use)
- IPX/SPX (Developed by Xerox used primarily on networks using the Novell NetWare)
- NetBIOS
- AppleTalk (used for Apple Computer's)
- HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) Layer 7
- HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) Layer 7
- WWW (World Wide Web) Layer 7
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Layer 7
- IP (Internet Protocol) Layer 3
- TCP (Transfer Control Protocol) Layer 4
- POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) Layer 7
- UDP (User Datagram Protocol) Layer 4
- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) Layer 7
- DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Layer 7
- SSH (Secure Shell) Layer 7
- IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) Layer 3
- SPX (Sequenced packet exchange) Layer 4
- IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) Layer 7
- Restart the PC and boot from W2k Install disk.
- Follow on screen Instructions to begin the Windows 2000 server Install (Licence F8,etc)
- Select and Create a Hard disk Partition
- Format that partition with NTFS (New Technology File System)
- Follow Onscreen Prompts to Install Windows 2000 server (region settings, Lang, Username, etc)
- Log Into Windows server 2000 and configure device drivers and network settings
- Run and configure Server Services. (FTP server, Web server, Application server)
