Default FTP file Transfer Protocol 2003 server.

This week we looked at enabling the FTP in windows server 2003 edition. This is the service to transfer files from one PC to another, the process is quite similar to the IIS or website setup mentioned in the last post. To start with of course server needs to be up and running as stated in previous entries, then the application server needs to be installed from the manage your server page, once the normal steps are done you can then start to install the FTP service for the server.  To start with you will need to head to control panel and Add/Remove Programs, then along the side click the tab for Add/Remove Windows Components once this is finished loading then you will need to  find application server and double click that then find Internet Information Service(IIS) and double click that and a screen like the one below will be next with File transfer Protocol in its list

Once you have selected this by putting a tick in the check box you need to hit ok until it starts to install the FTP service on the server.  Once this is completed the service is now installed on the machine but needs to be configured for proper usage we will be looking at this next week, but to test that the service installed correctly you can install a FTP client application such as FileZilla or SFTP and try to connect to the server with the hostname being its IP address and leaving most other settings as standard or check next weeks post for details on configuring the service and passing files in both read and write processes, but this should be enough information to download or read files from the server.
